MARINO DI TEANA
Marino di Teana (1920 - 2012) was an italian artist naturalized Argentinian, where he moved in 1936, before moving to France in Paris in 1953. One of the main and also most complex sculptur of XX Century, Di Teana was professor of architecture for more than twenty years at the American School of Fine Arts in Fontainebleau and represented Argentina at the Venice Biennale. The artists quotes regarding his artworks:” When I make a sculpture, I began with the pivot, the inside, the centre that I enlarge by leaving it to develop like a tree; as the work progresses, I remove the surplus to obtain a sort of quintessence, when all the internal forces reach their point of equilibrium.
That piece by Marino di Teana is a scaled down version of one of the largest steel sculptures in Europe, located at the Place Charles de Gaulle, Fontenay-sous-bois, France. Like most of di Teana’s work it emphasizes negative space as the most prominent formal element in sculpture.
